Fabric *___*

Inu-chan and I shopped at Stoffmarkt Holland yesterday (a huge fabric market that travels all across Germany and the Netherlands) and I went totally crazy *lol*

In case you're wondering, yes, these are all my bags!

I had a huge shopping list for next year's costumes, of course I couldn't afford to buy fabric for all of them, but I'm pretty happy with what I did find. I also bought a beautiful purple wool fabric and matching fur for a winter coat, as well as some knit fabric for t-shirts, so it's not just for cosplay ;)

I'm hoping to start working on some of these projects this afternoon, weekend's almost over again :(

Dragoncon 2010!

Just purchased my Dragon*Con membership *.*

Con season is over for me now, and I feel relieved... but I've already made 1 million plans for next year *lol*

I'm trying to drag a couple of my German cosplaying friends to Dragoncon with me (you know who you are!) - so watch out for us next year! :D

Wheee I'm so excited already :D ...but now I need to get back to preparing my lecture for Monday -_-

Connichi 2009
Fran
[info]scarletstarla
Before I shoot myself because of how the election went, here's my belated Connichi report. (For non-Germans: Connichi was AWA weekend^^)

I came down with a nasty cold / flu (?) right before the con, so I had to struggle hard to even make it through the weekend +_+ But it was WAY too much fun to miss!!!

Friday night, I premiered my Sheryl Nome (Macross) costume! I got there so late I didn't see much of my group *ahem* but at least we got to take some photos together before everyone changed out of costume ^___^

Saturday was Oh! My Goddess and Xenogears day.

My lovely Belldandy [info]chiisai_saku  and I met up with an immensely talented photographer that morning, thank you for taking the time!

After the shoot, I got ready for [info]roseria s epic Xenogears group... or at least I tried to *drop* I didn't get the costume done in time and I ended up pinning myself into it. Looking at photos, you can tell how sick and exhausted I was that afternoon, so I'll just post a group picture *lol*

(I'm Miang, the blue/purple-haired girl in the back.)

More Xenogears photos

We met up with the whole group (and [info]chiisai_saku  <3) later to have schnitzel at a pseudo-Bavarian restaurant, before I passed out sewing in my hotel room.

Got up early again on Sunday morning to pack and dress up as Viola!!! I'd been dreaming of my Eternal Sonata group for 1 1/2 years so I was beyond excited!!! I met up with [info]roseria , Gamina and Mirromaru in the garden / park (behind the con hall) and we had photos taken until we dropped *lol* (Or more precisely, until their boyfriends / husbands dragged them out of there.)

More Eternal Sonata photos

I didn't do anything but cosplay and chat with friends (and being sick -_-) and I know I missed a lot of people and didn't see much of the con... but I had a wonderful time! Thank you everyone!!! ^____^

Speed voting

I almost ran to the polling place today, I don't think I've ever cast my vote this quickly *lol* Let's see if it did any good.

Rant about the German election (auf deutsch:)) )

My favorite...

 ...birthday gift:

My sister says it took her months to make this! I own a lot of hand-knit scarfs she made (she's the one who knit my Rikku scarf!) but this one's made of incredibly soft, thin wool yarn, probably knit with a tiny needle... I can only imagine how tedious the process must have been.

And it even matches the shirt I wore that day! ^_^ Unfortunately, it's still way too hot to be wearing a scarf :(

I just relaxed all day, realized how OLD I am and how little I seem to have achieved this year, relaxed some more, had some yummy lasagna & wine while watching Ghost in the Shell (the original movie) because I just never get tired of watching it. (I really need to do a Motoko cosplay, like, NOW.)

On Saturday, I went to a cosplay gathering (only a few blocks away) and got some beautiful pictures of my Tsubaki costume, thank you Yukimura!!! ^_^

I'll try and post more photos (including the ones I took of other cosplayers) on animexx later this week.

How cool is that???!!!

As you guys already noticed, I spent the past 2 weeks working on my new Ivy (Soul Calibur) sword, and I finished it last night around 3 a.m....

...so I could attend the cosplay event at Comics am Steintor (a comic book store in downtown Hannover, i.e. the closest thing to a big city that we have around here^^)

Not only was const around with his evil soul-capturing device *lol* so I got the best Ivy pictures ever...

More pictures!

...but I also won the cosplay competition they held at the event, and am now the proud owner of a portable DVD player:

It's also an SD card reader and what-not, so it's going to come in really handy at my next convention ^_^ I love it, it's so cute!!!

Thanks to everyone at the event who made this a really great time, btw ^___^

Library during summer break = LOVE

Bus ride home with frighteningly normal, yet dysfunctional people (who argue with their ex on the phone all the way home)? Not so much -_- Yet... entertaining.

In other news, I finished my new Ivy wig a couple of days ago, much better this time^^ Now I really can't wait to wear the costume again, but the prop still needs a lot of work. I just miiiiight post progress pictures later, but now I need to get back to this horrible, really important report I need to hand in this week >_<

Yoruichi costume & more
Fran
[info]scarletstarla
This week's been crazy busy with wig commissions for AnimagiC, but now I finally get around to posting photos of my new costume I wore at a get-together in Hannover last weekend ^_^

Photo credits belong to Robin / const, thank you so much!!! Here's more.

I also took a few humble pictures myself, there were a lot of amazing cosplayers at the event though *.*

More cosplay news: I started revamping my Ivy costume this weekend, for a small event on Aug 8 that I'd like to go to!

I'm making an all-new sword, a new wig, and some detailing fixes on the actual costume.

I'm probably going to regret this because it's taking at least a week out of my schedule when I'm supposed to be working on my Connichi and Book Fair costumes instead -_- But that's just me, I'm not satisfied until I get in completely over my head lol.

Space!
Fran
[info]scarletstarla

Finally invested in a much-desired extension of harddrive space:

harddrive

One terabyte *lol* That one should last for a while, hopefully.

In other news...

My teaching efforts are going well, only one more weekend of classes to go and I'll be done for this semester. Safe for exams and papers, that is. But my students are way cool, I'm sure they'll do just fine ^.^

I got a shipment of feathers in time for the weekend, so I'm working on a new pair of wings right now! This one's tougher than I thought, the pinions are ridiculously long o_o They eat feathers like there's no tomorrow. (My guinea pig eats feathers too, so I have to keep her locked up while I'm working on the wings *lol*)

I voted for the European Parliament today, I was so. not. excited about this election -_- But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Not that it did any good, though >_> People = stupid. (Why didn't I vote for the Pirates' Party, anyway?)

one fine day

Today has been a good day :)

Finished the chapter I needed to hand in this week (so we can discuss it at my graduate school next week)... that makes about 5% of my thesis, lol. But I feel like now I can really dive into it and spend the next months writing, basically just typing down the ideas I've already got in my head and filling the blank pages (200 or so.)

Finally got my car fixed (even though I can't afford it) but it cost less than I thought it would because they happened to have a special offer for the parts. Now I can drive by a cemetery again without waking the dead with that rotten silencer ;)

Got my new sneakers I bought on ebay last week, and they're beautiful <3 OK they're just plain no-skool Vans, but a girly color *lol*

Found the perfect birthday present for a special someone... :3

Had dinner (fajitas), and even managed to watch Top Model while I was working on a wig and preparing my class for tomorrow ^^; Yeah well I procrastinated forever to write that chapter I needed to hand in, so I didn't really have the time to come up with something for the class I'm teaching... I'll just have to wing it this time and show some videos.

See you in Leipzig, everyone! ^_^
Fran
[info]scarletstarla

Browsing my friends page, I see that no one's finished with their costumes yet, so I almost feel left out a little *lol* I finished mine a week ago ^___^

Really looking forward to Leipzig Book Fair, this year's first big event, and there's a TON of people I'm looking forward to meeting there! I really, truly hope I can fit it all into this one short day, because I'll only be there on Saturday :(

So I won't leave until Saturday morning, but have a safe trip, everyone! (Particularly saku-chan, who won't be getting any sleep this night, as usual, I guess?! *hugs*)

Odango madness!
oops
[info]scarletstarla
Gee, we had a power outage today, the whole city was affected and it lasted for way over an hour o_o Thank goodness I've got a laptop computer so it didn't crash! Well at least I got some reading done (because there wasn't much else I could do *lol*)

Aaaand I took some photos! Finished the wig for a "Cookie Queen Lolita" original design that has been swirling around in my head for over a year now (because I found some supercute chocolate chip cookie print fabric I thought would be perfect for a themed Lolita dress...)

School's out!

[info]scarletstarla
To sum up the last week of this semester, let's just say that I'd expected to finally have more time for things other than university stuff and general slacking... but I can't change the way I work, I guess, and it's still been a pretty good week, I believe ^.^

My last class on Monday went smoothly, I even got some positive feedback from my students, and at least two of them were all for it when I told them I'm going to give a class on Star Wars this summer *lol* They were two of my best students, so I'm happy to see them again soon.

I finally got an appointment with my prof on Tuesday, to talk about the structure for my doctoral thesis. He was really helpful and the outline I'd whipped out the previous weekend actually survived *gasp* with a few adjustments that are making things a lot clearer for me. Now I just gotta start writing that damn thing *lol*

Since my bf and me are endlessly postponing my next visit (no time - no money - no point?) and I was home all week, I was able to follow some of the performances that the theatre arts students present at the end of each semester. Let's just say it was fun to see one of my students undress on stage and throw ground meat at the audience *lol* No seriously, I had a good laugh and the performances were pretty cool. I'm always looking out for potential candidates for future projects, anyway... should I ever give it another shot and try to direct a play again^^;

I am slowly, slowly making progress on my transcripts, and gathering more literature on qualitative methods and whatever crosses my path that might be helpful for my thesis. The rest of the week was filled with working on wig commissions, I've currently got 10 lined up that I'll be finishing over the course of the next two months *.* Man I hate dyeing extensions, who came up with that idea anyway? >_<

Next week is going to suck, time and money wise, since I'm meeting up with the people from my graduate school again - two days filled with exhausting lectures and eating out... but I'm sure we're gonna have fun^^ Still got a ton of reading to do, though, cuz I postponed this til the last minute as usual -_-

Die Wurzel allen Übels...?

[info]scarletstarla

Jawohl! *grrrr*

I hate quizzes ^^;

Your Word is "Think"
You see life as an amazing mix of possibilities, ideas, and fascinations.
And sometimes you feel like you don't have enough time to take it all in.

You love learning. Whether you're in school or not, you're probably immersed in several subjects right now.
When you're not learning, you're busy reflecting. You think a lot about the people you know and the things you've experienced.

I made a resolution last night! Well, nothing fancy... I want to try and go to one U.S. convention per year now - starting in 2010, when I'll hit Dragon*Con again, hopefully with a bunch of my German cosplaying friends ^_^

Then in 2011 (can't afford to go earlier) I want to show my boyfriend Comic-Con real bad. I know he'd love it, even though he normally hates conventions. He even agreed to cosplay *gasp* We made some crazy Masters of the Universe and video game cosplay plans, and eventually, he came up with something that doesn't include full body armor. Yay. (Because naturally, I'll be the one making all of our costumes...)

Anyway, really looking forward to my next con experiences, so now I really need to sit down and get to work. Chakka!

Ponytail madness

Check out my latest wig tutorial: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1856065/
It took me months to compile this, but I hope it will answer most how-do-I-put-a-wig-in-a-ponytail questions once and for all ^_^

University has started again, X-mas break was way too short and I finished about 2% of what I'd planned to do over the holidays -_- But at least the ponytail tut was one of the 2 *lol*

Belated Happy New Year to everyone out there ^o^

Wrapping it up

It's been such a busy year, convention-wise!!! I've been to three cons across the US - ACen, San Diego Comic-Con, and Dragon*Con - as well as J-Popcon in Denmark and my usual German conventions and cosplay-related events.

I've been traveling a lot in order to interview fan costumers for my thesis and to research communities that I wasn't familiar with earlier, like the Star Wars fandom. I've taken tons of pictures and met wonderful people wherever I went, and I'm so grateful for this experience - especially because it's also been great fun and I actually got to do what I like, while collecting hard data for very sincere academic purposes ;)

Sadly, con season is over now, I'm right in the middle of the winter semester at my university and there's really no excuse for slacking anymore. At Dragon*Con, I felt that it was time to wrap up my research and work with what I've got up to this point. I really needed to sit down and get to work - transcribe and analyze the data for my thesis, prepare for the class I teach every week, and do tons of other RL stuff *bleh*

2008 has been a fun year, but it's been exhausting (and expensive) too, so I'm still glad it's over now. I'm going to cut down on the fun and the traveling next year and figure out how I'm going to do this... thing, my thesis.

And now... some random pictures to wrap up this year *gasp*
